Venugopalan Ittekkot is a retired Professor of Biogeochemistry with research focus on coastal and oceanic fluxes and cycling of carbon and other nutrient elements under natural and perturbed conditions. He holds a Ph. D. in Geology from the University of Hamburg and was Director at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research at the University of Bremen (2000-2010) and at the Institute of Biogeochemistry and Marine Chemistry at the University of Hamburg (1993-2000). During that period Ittekkot has initiated and coordinated several bilateral marine research and capacity-building programs with developing coastal states in Africa and Asia. He has published and co-authored several articles and edited and co-edited reports and books on the theme. He has been advising and contributing to the work of ocean-related national and international panels, agencies and organizations (such as the IPCC, SCOPE, SCOR, UNESCO-IOC, NAM S&T Centre), and to their research-based capacity building efforts, in particular.
