Prof. Peter Liss is a former chair of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and until 2007 chair of its Surface Ocean – Lower Atmosphere Study project (SOLAS, co-sponsored by WCRP, SCOR and CACGP). Peter served on the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) for 5 years, chairing both its Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Boards. On 3 occasions he has been a member of the UK’s Research Assessment Exercise, the last as Chair of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Panel in 2001. Peter is a former president of the Challenger Society for Marine Sciences (2006-2008) and commissioner of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (2005-2011) and has been a member of Defra’s Scientific Advisory Council. In the UK he is a chair of the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN), the Advisory Committee of the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology in Scotland (MASTS) and the Underwater Sound Forum (USF).  He is Guest Professor at the Ocean University of Qingdao, China and Adjunct Professor at Texas A & M University, USA.  Prof. Liss is a Fellow of the Royal Society.
