5th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI)

The upcoming fifth session of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is poised to assess the implementation of the CBD in preparation for the forthcoming Conference of the Parties (COP), specifically CBD COP 16, anticipated to convene in 2024.

The establishment of the SBI was outlined in Decision XII/12 during the CBD COP, marking the replacement of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Review of Implementation of the Convention. The terms of reference for the SBI are detailed in the annex to Decision XII/26.

SBI’s functions and core areas of focus encompass: (a) evaluating progress in implementation; (b) formulating strategic actions to augment implementation; (c) reinforcing means of implementation; and (d) overseeing the operations of the convention and the Protocols. The Bureau of the Conference of the Parties assumes the role of the SBI’s Bureau.
