Taking the PULSE of the ocean

Just in time for the current UNFCCC COP26 in Glasgow, we are publishing the sixth episode of the Ocean InSight podcast. Join the hosts of OceanInSight Paul Tuda and Hauke Kegler to the western side of the African continent and learn about the partnership between researchers, political decision makers and fishermen to make local data in the appointed Senegalese coastal area via a mobile application accessible and useable.

In this episode Baye Cheikh Mbaye and Ibrahima Camara from Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics and Ocean Siméon Fongang at University Cheick Anta Diop in Dakar give insights into the collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of Senegal to disseminate the idea of a beneficial and participatory data gathering. The Ministry aims to adjust existing policies for the integration of medium and long-term climate change risks and adaptation measures.

Mbaye and Camara are two of the many people behind the MeerWissen partnership project Taking the Pulse of the Ocean (PULSE). This project finds a suitable and sustainable solution of retrieving ocean and coastal data for decision-making processes. The beneficiaries of this project will be coastal inhabitants, especially Senegalese fishing communities, local politicians and education hubs as universities and schools, which will be able to access and use the data via smartphone devices.

Tune in and learn how PULSE closes a loop from data to knowledge to action and back to data.

Ocean InSight is a MeerWissen podcast series on marine conservation and ocean science for sustainable development, with unique perspectives from those on the frontlines of research, policy and action.
