Raising awareness about provisioning ecosystem services and climate change mitigation and improving local knowledge in Madagascar

Tropical coastal ecosystems in the Western Indian Ocean region are under enormous pressure from increasing resource use, environmental degradation, and global climate change. This impedes their huge potential for mitigating the effects of climate change and their provision of a wide range of economic and non-monetary values to local communities. The PaMo project aims to improve the implementation of Nature-based Solutions and to identify needs and scenarios of an optimised use of local ecosystems for and with local communities in the Western Indian Ocean region.

As part of the project, a video was produced to improve local knowledge and raise awareness about provisioning ecosystem services and climate change mitigation in Madagascar.

Further achievements of the project include:

  • A workshop which gathered more than 30 participants from NGOs, institutions, CSOs, fishing associations, and conservation experts. The main challenges were identified and a collective model of coastal space use in Toliara was created, as well as a cognitive map.
  • A training program was conducted for local marine resource managers of the Atsimo-Andrefana region around participative modelling, sustainable governance, collective decision-making, and the integration of local knowledge. A practical guide was developed from this training.
